How Microneedling Works

Microneedling creates a series of tiny, precise channels in the skin with fine needles. The channels are small enough to close quickly, but they tell the body that repair is needed. The skin responds by producing collagen and elastin, the two proteins responsible for firmness and elasticity.
As that new collagen forms, the skin remodels itself: fine lines soften, texture refines, pores tighten and the appearance of scarring improves. The channels also let targeted serums reach deeper layers than they otherwise could, which we use to support the result.
How deep does microneedling go? It depends on the concern. Shallow passes for tone and texture, deeper settings for acne scars and firmness, all adjustable on the device and chosen by Dr. Cheshire for your skin, which is the difference between a clinical treatment and a roller from the internet.

Microneedling for fine lines and early wrinkles
The lines around the eyes and mouth that appear as collagen thins. Because the treatment stimulates your own collagen, the change is gradual and looks like better skin rather than treated skin.
Microneedling for acne scars
One of the strongest applications. Depressed and uneven scarring from past acne responds well because the treatment remodels the tissue in the scar itself rather than covering it. This typically requires a series of four to six.
Enlarged pores and rough texture
Skin that looks coarse or uneven close up. Building collagen in the surrounding dermis tightens the structure around each pore, which refines the overall surface. Does microneedling smooth skin? For texture, yes, measurably over a series.
Sun damage, tone and dullness
Years of Florida sun show as uneven tone and lost luminosity. Increased cell turnover and collagen production improve clarity and evenness over a course of treatments. Microneedling does not bleach or lighten skin; it evens it.

We prepare the skin
The area is cleansed and a numbing cream is applied so the treatment stays comfortable. A new sterile cartridge is opened for you.
The treatment itself
We move the device evenly across the area at the depth chosen for your concern. Most patients feel light pressure and vibration. A full face takes a short time, and we finish with LED to calm redness.
A short recovery
Expect redness like a mild sunburn for one to two days, comfortable in public by day two, settled by day three with light flaking as the surface turns over. Skip makeup, actives and retinoids for a couple of days and be disciplined about sunscreen.
Results build over a series
New collagen takes time to form. The result at three months is better than the one at three weeks, which is why we plan a series rather than a single session.

Microneedling is priced per session by the area treated, face, neck, chest or hands, with a lower rate for a series. LED after treatment is included in the session. You get the series cost at the free consultation.
Insurance
Microneedling is cosmetic and self pay. We do not bill insurance for it. There are no packages you have to buy up front.
How many sessions
Three to four sessions four to six weeks apart for tone, texture and fine lines. Four to six for acne scarring. One refresher session a year or two later maintains the result.

How It Compares
Microneedling versus home rollers, lasers and peels.
Versus the roller you bought online
Depth, precision and sterility. Home rollers cannot reach the depth required to trigger real collagen remodelling, and used aggressively they cause irritation and uneven trauma without the benefit. Clinical microneedling uses controlled, adjustable depth with a fresh sterile cartridge.
Versus ablative laser resurfacing
Ablative lasers remove the surface layer, with significant results, significant downtime and more risk in deeper skin tones. Microneedling creates channels while leaving the surrounding tissue intact, so recovery is days rather than weeks and it is safer across skin types.
Versus chemical peels
Peels work chemically at the surface and are excellent for tone and superficial texture. Microneedling works mechanically at depth and is better for scarring and firmness. They address different layers and are sometimes used in sequence.
