How Acupuncture Works

Acupuncture places fine needles at precise points in the body. Those points are locations where a needle can reach nerves, muscle and connective tissue and produce a measurable physiological response: pain signalling in the nervous system drops, blood flow to the treated tissue rises, tight muscle lets go and local inflammation falls.

The needles are hair thin; most patients feel a small pinch at most. Needles are retained for twenty to thirty minutes in a private room, and most people find it deeply relaxing. Wear loose clothing that rolls to the knees and elbows.

What sets the price
The first visit is longer because it includes the exam, the explanation and the first treatment. Follow-up visits are shorter and priced lower. Dry needling, electroacupuncture and cupping are part of a visit, not add-ons.
How many sessions
A recent strain may need only a few visits. Chronic back, knee and nerve problems usually start weekly for four to eight visits, then space out as the pain settles. Dr. Cheshire gives you the number after the exam, not off a menu.

Medicare and acupuncture, exactly. Original Medicare covers acupuncture for one diagnosis: chronic low back pain, meaning pain that has lasted twelve weeks or longer, has no identifiable systemic cause, and is not related to surgery or pregnancy. It allows up to twelve sessions in ninety days, eight more if you are improving, and no more than twenty in a year, under physician supervision, which Dr. Phipps provides here. Where it applies you pay the Part B deductible and then 20 percent of the Medicare-approved amount. No other therapy on this site is covered by Original Medicare.
