Does Acupuncture Work For Back Pain?

Yes, and here is why a scan cannot tell you that.

Most chronic back pain has no single broken part. Disc bulges and arthritis show up on scans of people with no pain, and plenty of severe pain comes with a clean scan. What tracks with symptoms is how the tissue is loaded, how long the deep muscles have been guarding, and how sensitized the pain signalling has become. Those three are exactly what needling changes.

The research backs it: individual patient-level meta-analyses of chronic low back pain show acupuncture outperforms both usual care and sham needling, with effects that persist after treatment ends. It is the strongest evidence base in the field, and it is why a back is the thing we treat most.

What a Wildwood back visit includes: dry needling for the lumbar and gluteal knots, acupuncture points for the segment and the signalling, cupping across the fascia over the hips, and electroacupuncture when a nerve is involved. Full back pain page.

Which Back

The four backs that come in from Wildwood.

The back that locked after lifting

Lifting and carrying for a week, then a low back that will not straighten. Guarding muscle over an irritated segment. Usually settles in a few visits, sooner if you come in early rather than waiting it out.

The back that tightens with rotation

A new activity that twists the back more than it has in years. Needling the hips and the lumbar fascia, plus a volume of activity you can keep.

The back with the thick file

Imaging, therapy, injections, still sore. The guarding and sensitization layers were never treated. This is where needling plus point injections or laser earns its keep.

The back that goes down the leg

Sciatica. Needling the piriformis and deep rotators that entrap the nerve, electroacupuncture to calm it. Sciatica page.

What To Expect

A back plan, from first call to last visit.

01

Exam before needles

Joint, disc, muscle and hip-driven back pain all behave differently. Dr. Cheshire examines the back and the hips, goes through your history and any imaging, and explains what he thinks is driving it.

02

Treat the tissue and the guarding

Releasing the irritated segment without settling the muscles protecting it is why relief does not hold. The visit does both.

03

Weekly, four to eight visits

Acute flares often settle in a few. Long-standing backs need the series. Keep moving; backs do badly with rest, and we tell you what to change about sitting and lifting.

04

Track it honestly

Morning stiffness, sitting tolerance and walking distance are easy to measure. If the plan is not working we adjust it or say what we recommend instead.

Common Questions

What do Wildwood patients ask about acupuncture?

The large analyses show the benefit persists after treatment ends, because needling changes the guarding and the sensitization rather than masking the signal. Many patients keep a monthly visit; many do not need one.
A recent flare: a few. A back that has hurt for years: a weekly series of four to eight, then spacing out. You get the number after the exam. Progress is scored against measurements taken at the first visit, and the plan is changed or stopped if the numbers have not moved by the checkpoint.
We are the nearest clinic we know of with a board certified acupuncture physician and a medical doctor together, twelve to eighteen minutes away at 910 Old Camp Road, Suite 162, The Villages. Patients from Oxford and Coleman make the same trip.
Hair-thin needles; a light tap at most. A dry-needled knot gives a brief twitch. Most people find the session relaxing. Dr. Cheshire reviews your medications, including blood thinners, before the first treatment, and anything injectable is supervised by Dr. Phipps, MD.
If your plan covers it, your copay or coinsurance. Self pay prices for the first visit and follow-ups are given on the phone. Call 352-430-2720. Every therapy is priced on its own and the whole course is quoted in writing at the free 20 minute consultation, with no program fee and no membership.
