Arthritis Treatment for Oxford, FL

That leaves acetaminophen, which helps a little, and a joint that still hurts. Arthritis treatment near Oxford, FL that involves no anti-inflammatory drug at all: acupuncture and dry needling for the guarding and signalling, low level laser for the inflamed lining, cupping for the stiff capsule, and non-steroid point injections where a joint will not hold, by a board certified acupuncture physician with a medical doctor on site who reviews your medication list first. Eight to twelve minutes up 441, first appointment at 7 AM.

Why The Pills Were Stopped
Anti-inflammatories treat the lining. So does light.
Can arthritis be treated without anti-inflammatories? Yes. The drugs work by lowering inflammation in the joint lining, and that is one of four layers that make an arthritic joint hurt. Laser lowers the same inflammation by a different route, with nothing passing through the stomach, kidneys or heart; needling, cupping and strength work treat the other three layers the drugs never touched.
Anti-inflammatories raise blood pressure, strain kidneys, thin the stomach lining and interact with blood thinners, which is why cardiologists and nephrologists stop them in patients over seventy. Acetaminophen is safer and weaker. Cortisone into the joint is limited to a few shots a year. What is left is the joint itself: the inflamed lining, the muscles that have tightened and weakened around it, the stiff capsule and the sensitized signalling. Osteoarthritis pain comes mostly from those layers, not the cartilage, which is why x-ray severity and pain correlate so poorly and why treatment aimed at the soft tissue changes how a joint feels.
We review your medication list before anything else, plan around blood thinners, and never change a prescription. Dr. Phipps, MD, is in the building. Full arthritis page.
Four Tools, No Drugs
What each one does to an arthritic joint.
Low level laser
Red and near infrared light lowers inflammation in the joint lining and raises cellular energy in the tissue around it, painlessly, with good trial support in arthritic joints. Nothing is ingested. How laser works.
Acupuncture and dry needling
One of the best studied uses of acupuncture, with large randomized trials in knee osteoarthritis. Releases the guarding muscle, retrains how the joint is loaded, turns down the sensitized signalling. Hair-thin needles; we plan around blood thinners. How acupuncture works.
Cupping
Decompresses the tight fascia and muscle around a stiff joint, often what limits movement more than the joint surface. Lighter cups on blood thinners. How cupping works.
Non-steroid point injections
Zeel at the points around a joint that helps but will not hold. Not cortisone, no steroid load on the heart or kidneys. Injection therapy.
The trial record: a 2024 review of ten randomized trials, 3,221 people with knee osteoarthritis Source: Chen et al., Current Pain and Headache Reports, 2024 (10 trials, 3,221 participants), found acupuncture improved pain and function against sham for about four and a half months after treatment. A pooled analysis of roughly 18,000 chronic pain patients found it beat sham and usual care with lasting benefit and far fewer side effects than the drugs Source: Vickers et al., Archives of Internal Medicine, 2012 (29 trials, 17,922 patients). What To Expect
What happens at the first arthritis treatment visit for Oxford patients?
7 AM exam, medication list first
Dr. Cheshire reviews blood thinners, heart and kidney medications, then examines the joint and the chain around it, reads any imaging, and screens for the inflammatory pattern that needs rheumatology.
Laser and needling, same visit
Weekly for the first month. Cupping for the capsule, injections only if a joint will not hold.
Keep moving
Cartilage is fed by motion and joints stiffen fast with rest. What to keep doing, what to scale back, and the strength work that protects the joint.
Every two to four weeks as it settles
Stairs, distance, morning stiffness and swelling tracked. If the plan is not working we say so, or say when a surgical opinion is the right next step.
