Pain on the outside of the hip that is worst lying on that side at night, climbing into the car or standing after a long stretch on your feet. Oxford sends us a lot of these. In short: Shockwave therapy for outer hip tendon pain, 8 to 12 minutes from Oxford, FL. For the hip that hurts at night and did not stay fixed. 352-430-2720. Pain on the outside of the hip that is worst lying on that side at night, climbing into the car or standing after a long stretch on your feet.

Hip Bursitis Or Tendon?

Why the cortisone shot into the "bursa" wore off.

Outer hip pain gets labelled trochanteric bursitis and treated with a steroid injection into the bursa. For most people the bursa is not the problem. The gluteus medius and minimus tendons that attach to the point of the hip have degenerated, the way an Achilles or a tennis elbow does, and a cortisone shot quiets them for six weeks before they come back.

Shockwave treats the tendon itself. Acoustic pressure waves into the attachment restart the stalled remodelling, bring circulation back into tissue that has gone quiet and calm the pain signalling that made lying on that side impossible. Trials comparing ESWT with cortisone for gluteal tendinopathy favor shockwave at follow-up, because the tendon has actually changed.

The Oxford pattern: hands-on people, long days standing or on uneven ground, a hip that did not get a day off. Shockwave fixes the tendon; we also look at the hip and core strength that let it overload. Full hip pain page.

Is This Your Hip?

Gluteal tendinopathy usually looks like:

  • Pain on the point of the hip, not the groin, worst lying on that side at night.
  • Standing on one leg, stairs and getting out of a low chair or the car hurt.
  • It has been there three months or more.
  • A cortisone shot or "bursitis" diagnosis helped briefly, then it returned.
  • Imaging, if you have had it, mentions tendinosis or a partial-thickness tear.

Groin pain is a different hip. Pain in the front of the hip or groin that limits rotation is usually the joint itself, and shockwave is not the tool for a joint surface. We examine first and say which hip you have.

What To Expect

A hip series from Oxford.

01

7 AM exam

Oxford patients like the first slot. Dr. Cheshire tests the gluteal tendons, the joint and the strength of the hip and core, then treats the same visit.

02

Four to six weekly sessions

Five to ten minutes of firm tapping over the tendon attachment with a larger applicator head than we use on a heel. Sore for a day after; that is the response.

03

Strength between visits

Gluteal tendons rebuild under the right load. You get a short hip strength program and a few changes to sleeping and sitting positions that stop re-compressing the tendon.

04

Night pain is the marker

Sleeping on that side again is how we know it is working. Improvement keeps building for two to three months after the series.

Shockwave Therapy Cost

How much does shockwave therapy cost for Oxford patients, and what does insurance cover?

Priced per session

A hip series is usually four to six sessions. We quote the whole course at the free consultation; the number is put in writing for Oxford patients before the first treatment.

Not covered by insurance

ESWT is self pay here and almost everywhere. Acupuncture and needling visits in the same plan are covered by many insurance plans, which we confirm by phone.

Versus repeated cortisone

A steroid shot is cheaper once. Three of them a year, with a tendon that is thinner each time, is not. Shockwave is the one you do once.

The first 20 minute consultation is free and no referral is needed. Call 352-430-2720. For reference, consumer cost guides put a single acupuncture visit in the United States at roughly $50 to $150, and we quote your own course in writing at the free consultation. Common Questions

What do Oxford patients ask about shockwave therapy?

It is one of the better supported uses. Studies comparing shockwave with cortisone for outer hip tendon pain favor shockwave at follow-up, and it pairs with hip strengthening, which is the other half of the fix. We state the limits of the evidence as plainly as the results, and measure your own progress from the first visit rather than quoting success rates.
Usually the tendon, even when imaging mentions the bursa. The exam sorts it out: tendon pain reproduces on single-leg standing and resisted hip movement; joint pain lives in the groin and limits rotation.
Per session, quoted as a course of four to six at the free consultation. Self pay. Call 352-430-2720 for the number. Every therapy is priced on its own and the whole course is quoted in writing at the free 20 minute consultation, with no program fee and no membership.
Firm tapping over the tendon for five to ten minutes. The intensity is adjustable; the hip is sore for a day afterward, and then it is not. Dr. Cheshire reviews your medications, including blood thinners, before the first treatment, and anything injectable is supervised by Dr. Phipps, MD.
Yes. Tendons rebuild under load. We adjust what re-compresses the tendon, such as sleeping on that side and sitting cross-legged, and keep you on your feet.
No. Shockwave is self pay. Acupuncture visits are covered by many plans, which we check for you first. Bring your card to the free consultation and we confirm the benefit, the visit cap and your copay before anything is booked.
